The 500,000 square-foot historic Old Post Office was redeveloped to include a 263-suite luxury hotel with guestrooms and suites. In addition, two extraordinary Presidential Suites will be located in the historic former offices of the Postmaster General. At 3,500 and 5,000 square feet, the three-bedroom suites will be among the largest in the country. The renovation also included 39,000 square-feet of meeting space, a 13,000 square-foot grand ballroom, BLT Prime Restaurant, Ivanka Spa and museum space. The Cortile with its 180’+/- atrium will function as the hotel’s gathering place, comprising the grand lobby and lounge. The Old Post Office’s clock tower, will continue to offer panoramic views of Washington, D.C., and showcase the ‘refurbished’ Bells of Congress.
The electric scope of work included the installation of new electrical services and a 600kw generator for both the Old Post Office and Annex buildings as well as a new Fire Alarm System for both buildings. The lighting and lighting controls for the Old Post Office and Ballrooms consisted of a Lutron System that controls the lighting in the Cortile, Ballrooms as well as all of the Public areas. The lighting fixtures for the building consisted of both Owner furnished and contractor supplied fixtures. Fixtures included simple LED down lights to the most ornate Chandlers in the guest rooms as well as the Ballrooms and public spaces. The most intricate element of the electrical system installations was not disturbing the historical elements that remained in the building.
